Pantone's Peachy New Hue: All About Peach Fuzz

Pantone has been selecting colors of the year since 2000, and each year’s selection is eagerly anticipated by designers and consumers alike. The colors are chosen based on their cultural significance, as well as their ability to influence fashion, design, and other industries. For 2024, Pantone has chosen Peach Fuzz, a warm and inviting shade that bridges the gap between pink and orange. This color is meant to evoke feelings of calm, comfort, and nurturing, making it an ideal choice for interior design.

The History of Pantone Colors

Pantone is a company that specializes in color matching and printing. It was founded in 1962 by Lawrence Herbert, who developed a system for identifying, matching, and communicating colors. This system, known as the Pantone Matching System (PMS), is still widely used today.

In 2000, Pantone introduced its first color of the year, Cerulean Blue. Since then, the company has selected a new color each year, based on its cultural significance and its ability to influence design and fashion trends. Some of the most notable colors of the year include Radiant Orchid (2014), Marsala (2015), Greenery (2017), and Classic Blue (2020).

Peach Fuzz: A Dining Room Design Dressed In Pantone’s Color For 2024

Why Peach Fuzz Was Chosen

Peach Fuzz was chosen as the color of the year for 2024 because of its warm and inviting nature. The shade, one of over 20,000 in the company’s color library, is a gentle orange-pink. It is a blend of pink and orange, which makes it versatile and easy to incorporate into a variety of design schemes.

Peach Fuzz is meant to evoke feelings of calm, comfort, and nurturing, which are all important qualities in today’s fast-paced world. It  is projected by Pantone's experts to capture the mood in the upcoming year. According to Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Peach Fuzz is described as "nurturing," "warm," and "welcoming." “In a world that can seem very harsh, people are looking for colors that soothe, colors that are soft and warm, colors that nurture and provide us with comfort,” Eiseman says.

As early as May 2023, the Pantone team noticed peach tones popping up across design industries while conducting research for the 2024 Color of the Year. Peachy shades appeared on everything from fashion pieces to household items and automobiles.

Leatrice Eiseman says these peach variants were incredibly prevalent.  Through ongoing analysis of cultural moods and color trends, paired with lively debates amongst the team, they eventually zoomed in on a specific peach hue that embodied the zeitgeist.

Peach Fuzz in Interior Design

Peach Fuzz can be incorporated into interior design in a variety of ways. One of the easiest ways to use this color is to pair it with blue, green, or neutral shades like white, gray, or beige. This will allow the Peach Fuzz to stand out and create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Another way to use Peach Fuzz is to pair it with other warm colors like yellow, red, or brown. This will create a cozy and inviting space that is perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

Peach Fuzz can also be used in furniture and accessories. For example, a Peach Fuzz sofa or armchair can be paired with neutral walls and floors to create a cozy and inviting living room. Peach Fuzz throw pillows, blankets, and curtains can also be used to add a pop of color to any room.
